Divorce and Separation

Whether you’ve decided that your marriage has come to an end or are unsure about your future, it's important to know what your options are.

At Burnett Barker Solicitors, we understand that the breakdown of a relationship can be stressful and upsetting. When emotions run high, our divorce and separation solicitors can help calm a situation to find a practical solution for you and your family.

In guiding you and supporting you through the process, our divorce solicitors will help you understand your options and make the legal separation process as stress-free as possible.

Our divorce and separation solicitors will help you make key decisions about your children, property, and finances at a time when you perhaps feel least prepared to make them.

Our approach to divorce and separation

As divorce lawyers specialising in all family law matters, we get to know our clients well, and as such, we realise the importance of being kind, understanding and compassionate.

We’re always happy to listen – it’s only by doing this that we can help you achieve the best possible outcome.

With us by your side, the technicalities of divorce and separation feel less overwhelming. Taking a constructive approach, our divorce solicitors look for a non-confrontational solution to secure the best outcome for you.

Discover your options for a fixed fee

If you want to know where you stand and what your options are, we offer a one-to-one family law consultation for a fixed fee of £149. Most clients discover something they were unaware of in this consultation, which reaffirms how important it is to find out what your options are.

Simply call Burnett Barker Solicitors on 01284 701131. You can also send us a message, or pop in and see us at 20 Whiting Street, Bury St Edmunds - we have free parking on site!

Speech bubble

What happens at your first meeting with us?

Whether you intend to start divorce proceedings, or your ex-partner already has, our fixed fee family law consultation will let you know where you stand.

As part of the initial consultation, and following your sharing of personal and financial details, our divorce solicitors will advise you on what your possible outcome may be and the next steps you could take. Most of our clients feel far more in control just knowing what their options are.

If this is the first time you’ve sought the help of a divorce lawyer, it’s likely you won’t know quite what to expect from your first meeting. For many people, the very idea of having to talk about circumstances very personal to them can be daunting, that’s why it helps to come prepared.

Here’s a checklist of what we recommend you think about and bring with you:

  • Write down when you got married, started living together, both yours and your ex-partner’s date of birth, and any children you have.
  • Detail any assets of financial value – it’s helpful if you have a realistic value of your home, the current size of your mortgage, as well as any investments, savings, pensions, and incomes.
  • If you’re confident you want to start divorce proceedings, it’s helpful to bring along a copy of your marriage certificate.

Sometimes, if you’re meeting a divorce solicitor for the first time, you may feel more comfortable bringing a friend or family member for support. That’s completely fine. All we ask is that you let us know in advance so that we can welcome you both on arrival.
